Women's struggle for freedom in Iran and Afghanistan

Friday, June 13th at 3:00 PM-3:45 PM ,

📍 C35 - Institute for Human Rights

How can Denmark support women's rights in Iran and Afghanistan?

Since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in 2021, women's rights have been drastically restricted: They are not allowed to study, run a business or travel more than 78 km without a male guardian. In Iran, the oppression of women is also intensifying. In 2024, the Iranian regime introduced the death penalty, flogging and imprisonment for women who defy the requirement for mandatory covering. The morality police have been reintroduced and use surveillance to control women's clothing. Despite the extreme state gender oppression, we see strong protest movements such as 'Women, Life, Freedom' in Iran and a resistance movement in exile and underground in Afghanistan. Hear activists, experts and politicians debate how we can strengthen women's rights. And how Denmark, by virtue of its position as a member of the UN Security Council and the upcoming EU presidency, can strengthen their fight. Photos/video will be taken during the event for use on the Danish Institute for Human Rights website or SoMe.

Solidarity and International Activism against Gender Apartheid

Friday, June 13th at 5:00 PM-5:45 PM ,

📍A38 - Danchells Tent

How can we as a society and individuals support the fight for freedom, equality and democracy?

Despite massive pressure and brutal repression, activists around the world continue to organize resistance and mobilize international solidarity for women and girls' struggle for rights in Iran and Afghanistan. Women's struggle for equality has historically been connected across national borders, and today civil society plays a crucial role in the fight against systematic gender-based oppression. The need for continued international support is urgent as women's rights in these regions are systematically being eroded. Join us for an engaging panel discussion, where we will focus on the global campaign "End Gender Apartheid" and discuss how we as societies and individuals can strengthen the fight for freedom, equality and recognition of gender apartheid. The audience is invited to actively engage by asking questions to the panel. Also visit our digital solidarity corner with photo booths, powerful quotes and campaign hashtags, and help send a message of support and solidarity.

A conversation about how activists' fight for freedom and rights transcends national borders.

Human rights are under pressure all over the world. In Denmark, too, our human rights obligations are regularly questioned. Come and hear young Danish civil society activists enlighten us on how the fight for freedom and human rights in their or their family's countries of birth in the Middle East is connected to their activism and rights work in Denmark.
